Mercyhurst University tick researchers comb Presque Isle

Erie armory renovated, dedicated with state historical marker

  • On July 2, state, local and Erie Insurance officials dedicated a Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission marker at the former Pennsylvania National Guard 112th Infantry Regiment armory, located at East Sixth and Parade Streets in Erie. Former NFL player Jerome Bettis visits fans at Splash Lagoon

  • Jerome Bettis, 43, former NFL running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, meets fans June 26 at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort in Summit Township. "It's always fun to come to a place that has a tremendous outpouring of support," said Bettis, who retired in 2006 after the Steelers won the Super Bowl XL. "Coming to a place like Erie means a lot, because you're able to reach fans that you're not normally introduced to." Bettis will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 8, 2015, in Canton, Ohio.

Erie-area seniors get $20 vouchers for produce at local farm stands

  • On June 24, senior citizens came to the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie where officials from the Greater Erie Community Action Committee distributed 1,000 $20 food vouchers to needy seniors from the Erie area. The vouchers, part of a total of 3,500 being distributed locally, are valid through November and entitle senior citizens to $20 worth of produce at 40 farmer's markets and produce stands in Erie County.
