Area Vocalists Sing "The Star-Spangled Banner"

  • 18 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Almost 200 years ago, a lawyer being held captive by the British inspired by the sight of the American flag wrote what would become our national anthem. On Sept. 13 and 14, 1814, during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key witnessed the British naval assault on the American Fort McHenry near Baltimore, Md. Key was a 35-year-old lawyer who was being held by the British Royal Navy on a ship in the Chesapeake Bay. On the morning after the bombardment, he saw the American flag still flying over the fort and wrote a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry." The first portion of that poem was set to an old British tune and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner." By Congressional order, the song became our national anthem in 1931. To mark the 200th anniversary of Key's poem, we asked several Erie-area vocalists to offer their version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
