Sailboat capsizes in Presque Isle Bay without injury

  • View photos from Erie's bayfront during a rescue of a woman after her sailboat capsized in Presque Isle Bay on Aug. 1 while sailing with a companion. The rescued boater, 16-year-old Emma Shimek of Erie, reported being overtaken by sudden, intense winds that capsized the boat several times. Shimek and her unidentified companion reported being uninjured. The companion was able to swim to Presque Isle State Park while Shimek tried to right the boat. The boat was towed to Presque Isle Yacht Club by a West Lake Fire Department boat crew.

Nickel Plate 765 locomotive steams through Erie

The locomotive was built in 1944 for the former New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, known as the Nickel Plate Road, which ran through Erie on the now-removed 19th Street railroad tracks.
