Clients of Erie homeless shelter renovate a donated house in Erie

  • 9 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • This house, photographed June 30 and July 1, and located at 1013 E. 5th St. in Erie, is being renovated by clients of the Upper Room, Erie's day homeless shelter. Officials at the Upper Room acquired the house via Wells Fargo’s Community Urban Stabilization Program, which allows the financial giant to deed foreclosed properties with a clear title to a pre-approved nonprofit or government agency. Homeless men served by the Upper Room are fixing up the house and learning building rehabilitation skills. Upper Room executive director Cris Taylor says the shelter might turn this into a continuing program to assist its clients and to help improve neighborhoods. This 2,000 square foot house, built in 1896, will be divided into a three-bedroom downstairs apartment and a two-bedroom upstairs apartment. The building will probably be sold, but plans for the property are not final yet. Photos by ERIE TIMES-NEWS STAFF
